Community as Entrepreneur
RHCA President Mike Fedyk has worked with several Saskatchewan communities to stage historical re-enactments, festivals and commemorations that attracted hundreds of tourists, significant media attention and raised thousands of dollars. He has also studied other projects in many other communities that have been equally successful. All these events help build community pride, support economic development and provide funds for local causes from sources outside the community. Covering the topics outlined below, this presentation explains how similar events can be organized in your community:
Telling Your Stories: Making Historical Tourism Work for Your Community
Every community has a wealth of stories that tourists would be interested in hearing and, in fact, even willing to pay to hear. Most communities already have institutions like local museums and groups like local drama clubs and service clubs with the talents and skills to present these stories in entertaining and exciting manners. All that is needed is for communities to marshal these resources and present their stories. Using examples from success stories all over the province, Mike shows how to tell stories in ways that will attract attention, excite tourists and foster community pride.
Generating Revenue from Outside Your Community
Saskatchewan communities are experts on raising money. Every year they raise millions of dollars to keeps rinks open, build playgrounds and support a myriad of community activities. However, there is a limit to the funds available in any community and if smaller communities are to succeed they need to bring in funds from the outside. This presentation provides practical methods of how outside funds can be brought in through advertising, sponsorship, tourism and grants by using the same skills and activities that rural communities already excel in and use every year!
Communication and Attracting Attention
Today’s marketplace is crowded with messages and it is more challenging than ever to attract attention for events. The cost of advertising and professional assistance can be prohibitive, but this presentation offers strategies and describes vehicles that both reach the audiences you need and cost almost nothing.
This presentation can be offered in both a one-hour motivational speech or as a half-day or full-day workshop. Regardless of length, aside from covering Mike’s travel, accommodations and meal expenses, the presentation is free to any Saskatchewan grassroots organization.
