LEADER POST ARTICLE SPOTLIGHTS NWMP TRAIL EVENTS

An article in the June 22, 2009 edition of the Regina Leader Post highlighted the upcoming six Celebrate the NWMP Trail festivals taking place in South West Saskatchewan between July 1 and August 2, 2009.  Written by Ron Petrie, the article provides insight into some of the motivations behind the staging a series of events along the path of the North-West Mounted Police Trail. Petrie writes:

Many would argue it was. Deep in ranchlands of the southwest is a 300-kilometre trail, blazed by First Nations and patrolled by the North-West Mounted Police for bringing law to the frontier, an overland route that in its own way swayed the story of Saskatchewan — perhaps not that of its homesteads, specifically, or of its railways, but certainly no small degree of its political attentions — away from the more northern river courses once viewed as the natural east-west way of crossing.
