Media Events Scheduled for Regina & Yorkton
Posted on April 25th, 2008The Rural History and Culture Association, in cooperation with community groups in the Town of Lemberg, will be holding media events in Regina on May 22 and in Yorkton on June 4.

These media events will formally announce the details of a one-day festival that is being held in Lemberg on June 28, 2008. The festival commemorates the debate between Premier James Gardiner and R. H. Hawkins, an American organizer for the Ku Klux Klan of Kanada, which took place June 28, 1928, in Lemberg. The festival will feature two performances of a historical re-enactment of the 1928 debate, entitled James Gardiner Vs the Ku Klux Klan: The Struggle for a Multicultural Future. It will also include multicultural entertainment and meals as well as historic tours, children’s activities and will be capped off with a street dance. The Media event in Regina starts at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 22 in the Saskatchewan Gallery of the Provincial Legislature. The event will be a half-hour in duration and will include:
Greetings from his honour, Dr. Gordon Barnhart, Lt. Governor of Saskatchewan
A presentation on the Ku Klux Klan in Saskatchewan by Dr. James Pitsula, Professor of History at the University of Regina, who is currently writing a book about KKK activities in the province in the 1920s
A presentation of a portion of the historical re-enactment: James Gardiner Vs the Ku Klux Klan: The Struggle for a Multicultural Future. This will feature Bill Gardiner as James Gardiner and members of the Lemberg Drama Group, Culture Shock as KKK hecklers. (Bill is the great-nephew of James Gardiner)
Yorkton WDM
The media event in Yorkton starts at 10:00 on Wednesday, June 4 in the Western Development Museum. The event will be a half-hour in duration and will include:
Greetings from local dignitaries
A presentation on Ku Klux Klan activities in the Yorkton area by Terri Lefebvre-Prince. Ms. Lefebvre-Prince is the City of Yorkton Historian.

I’m going to try to make it to the May 22 event at the Leg. It’s just a short walk from work. It will be interesting to hear about this lost chapter of our province’s history.
